December to Remember #3: Let's Celebrate Life

On the last day of 2009, I once again recount the many occasions that happened this December. These were the ones that truly made this month a December to remember.

December 15 & 16, 2009

In my previous posts, I have highlighted the first and second parts of my Red & Green themed 22nd birthday. Allow me this time to write about the 3rd, 4th, and 5th parts.

On the day of my actual birthday, I had a sumptuous meal with one of my best buds Mickey at Omakase, Il Terrazo. I’m usually a punctual person when it comes to appointments, but this time, I was about 15 minutes late. Shame on me! When I arrived, lo and behold he was there waiting for me with his gifts contained in also red and green paper bags. We looked really funny, but who cares… it’s my birthday! Time went so fast that it was time for him to go back to work and for me to get ready for my next celebration.

By 3PM: Wearing my red-checkered Dean and Trent long sleeves, black H&M trousers and white loafers, I rode the jeepney and MRT just to reach TriNoma before the rush hour starts. Franz surprised me with a gift while waiting at Starbucks; Johanna and Mark Lim came in a few minutes after. It was super traffic that day that some people even rode the MRT just to make it to my birthday – thank you Nikki, Mayk, Richard Dee, Jojo, Clarence, AJ. After strolling around, alas it was already 7pm – time for my 22nd birthday celebration at Red Box. Hours flew and people arrived one after the other. I am so glad that they did wear Red or Green tops! The microphone veterans Dict, Pam, Maryka and Lea sang their hearts out together with Ace, who said it was his first time to sing in public. Marc Ong, Ria, Magsy, Jackie and Mimai were also there to cheer the singers. We all had fun and in fact even transferred to Starbucks to continue the celebration – this time, the birthday of Pam. Super fun! Thanks guys!

The celebration isn’t over as I had my last lunch treat the next day with a very close friend Mike at Heaven & Eggs, Glorietta. I received a Dementia cake from him that tasted really good; I almost forgot I was eating a cake instead of chocolates. A few hours later, we separated ways as I had to go to work again.

There you have it… my 22nd birthday with Red & Green as the theme for 2009! Thank you to everyone who remembered me through whatever medium.

Your Events, Literally in the Sky

Gastronomy on top of Paris, meeting on top of London City, moonlight party in Istanbul, wedding in Jaipur stars, VIP step over at Monaco F1, cocktail over Copacobana... the sky is the limit! These and other more events brought to you by Events in the Sky!

After seeing this on TV, I have been dreaming of having this kind of setup for my 80th birthday. I hope I'd be rich (and alive) by then, because I assume this approximately costs millions; but I'm sure the guests will feel very fascinated and special when it happens.

Technology Exposes 'Bro' of May Bukas Pa

With various friends tagged in Facebook, I am not sure if I'd be happy or not to see the picture of May Bukas Pa's "Bro", since it loses the mystery and curiosity people have on his character.

For those who don't know, May Bukas Pa is a top-rating drama show of ABS-CBN in the Philippines starring Zaijan Jaranilla as Santino. It has been running for about 10 months, with 231 episodes shown as of December 23 of this year. Aside from the fact that the story has given inspiration, hope and faith to many, it has showcased the talents of many Kapamilya stars by guesting several of them throughout the running of this series.

To date, Zaijan has been acknowledged to be one of the brightest stars of ABS-CBN, as well as 2009's Best Male New-TV Personality from PMPC. With the tremendous success of the show, the network got inspiration from this, thus the composition of their Christmas station ID entitled Star ng Pasko, composed by Robert Labayen.

Thanks or no thanks to technology for exposing what 'Bro' looks like? Would you know who the source of this was? Is this for real? Post your thoughts on this and let me know.

World's Fastest Train Link from China

I admire China for its innovation to spur economic growth amid the global downturn. They have just unveiled the longest high-speed train link between Wuhan and Guangzhou, which runs at an average speed of 350 kilometers (217 miles) an hour. The super-high-speed train reduces the 1,069 kilometer journey to a three-hour ride and cuts the previous journey time by more than seven and a half hours, the official Xinhua news agency said.

By comparison, the average for high-speed trains inJapan was 243 kilometres per hour while in France it was 277 kilometers per hour, said Xu Fangliang, general engineer in charge of designing the link, according to Xinhua.

Beijing has an ambitious rail development program aimed at increasing the national network from the current 86,000 kilometers to 120,000 kilometers, making it the most extensive rail system outside the United States.

China unveiled its first high-speed line at the time of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 – a service linking the capital with the port city of Tianjin.

The network uses technology developed in co-operation with foreign firms such as Siemens, Bombardier and Alstom.

December to Remember #2: Spontaneous, Busy, Fun

Second week of December passed by so quickly, as it was filled with schedule after schedule mixed with spontaneity and busyness. I was only left with three working days, because I filed for a couple of leaves to attend to personal matters.

December 8 saw me at different places, attending to different things I need to do for myself. It started 10:30AM at St. Lukes Hospital when I finally paid a visit to my dentist for a dental cleaning, which I was supposed to have 6 months back. An hour later, riding the Metro-Rail Transit (MRT) rushed me rapidly to the Ayala Station to start another boxing fight as I renew my driver's license. Each hour passed by so slowly as I wait for the horrible slowness of the medical and drug test personnel. After four hours of waiting and finishing my tests, it was a big disappointment to know that their Internet provider (which is PLDT, by the way) was down and won't be able to process my license renewal. With disgust and angst, I hurriedly rode the MRT and decided to meet up with my friend Pam at TriNoma. Little did I know that this night will be a fun night of shopping and chit-chatting with a friend who has never failed to make other people laugh and smile. I ended up buying 2 tops from Dean and Trent that were on sale, as well as few items from my Christmas gifts shopping list. The night ended when we parted ways around 8PM, as I rode another MRT going home.

December to Remember #1: Bday with College Friends

The first Saturday of December marked my first of the many birthday celebrations as I turn 22 this 2009. After a year of missing each other's presence, my college friends and I met up to have lunch together at YakiMix, Mall of Asia. This isn't my first time to try YakiMix; my first time was at the Macapagal Ave. area. If you haven't tried it yet, you should - that is if you're into eating ready-to-eat food and at the same time cooking them for your personal enjoyment. For the price of Php499.00 for lunch on weekdays and Php580 (+55 for drinks) on weeknights and weekends, I can say it's all worth it. Thanks to Boboy, Jessica, and Stacey for coming to my lunch treat! Too bad Tsai didn't make it because of work.

Pictures and more write up after the jump.

DeadFake.com can be a dangerous site

I don't know if you have already tried using DeadFake.com. It's a website that allows you to send free fake e-mail to anyone from anyone anonymously. As long as you use a valid TO and FROM domain e-mail addresses, it will surely work! Your e-mail will appear to be sent from anyone you choose. It's like a real e-mail client that enables you to format the texts, input images and links, etc.
This might become dangerous or offbeat when you use it to send a spam or threatening e-mail to your enemies or bosses or to anyone you would like to joke around. Really dangerous, especially because this is free and anonymous.

Companies Bid Goodbye to Tiger Woods

The no. 1 golfer Tiger Woods hullabaloo started a couple of weeks back, when he was reported to have had a car accident. With the recent scandal that revealed he had about 10 mistresses and committed "infidelity" in his marriage to Elin Nordegren, company after company are now analyzing and determining if they will still continue their ties with him.

Accenture recently released its decision of cutting their relationship with the golfer, as they have determined that he is no longer the right representative for its advertising. This decision was released a day after Proctor & Gamble's Gillette divulged its statement that they will limit the exposure of Woods in its marketing campaigns.

On a positive note, Woods' endorsements for Nike, PepsiCo's Gatorade and Electronic Arts recently announced that they will continue to support their commercial image model.

New calling rates start December 6

Thanks to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for pushing the "per pulse" rate for voice calls, which will make billings more transparent and reflective of the real costs of a call. This new rate starts today, December 6, 2009, and is applicable only to calls made within the same network for now. The same billing will however be applicable as well to calls made from one network to another on December 16, to give way to the networks' system adjustments. More information about the great news quoted from Inquirer below:

The new scheme does not change the per-minute cost of cell phone calls but it will reflect calls lasting less than a minute.

Under the new rates, telecom firms will be allowed to charge a "flagdown" rate of P3 for the first two pulses, or a total of 12 seconds. Every succeeding pulse will then be billed. Each minute has 10 six-second pulses.

To illustrate, assuming the prevailing rate is P7.50 per minute, every pulse after the flagdown rate will cost 56 centavos. After the first minute, the per-pulse charge will increase to 75 centavos.

The resulting cost of a call per minute will still be P7.50 but calls under one minute will cost less. A 30-second call will cost P4.69.

Thanks to Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile for criticizing the telcos' billing system, for which this new billing system has resulted.

If you answer 'Yes' to the question above, then you must visit this site. It's just a simple website with a little game-slash-stress-reliever that I find hilarious. Well, you'll be able to put your angst out through the game, even just for a few minutes.

LTO License Plate Verification

You may have heard of stories where car owners are accused that the car they're driving is not duly registered, even if they show the Official Receipt - LTO Car Registration. This, of course, is just a tactic for policemen to get bribe money.

Verification of license plates may come handy at anytime you need it, especially when you face odd situations during checkpoints or when you want to verify the registration of a second-hand car you're planning to buy.

Know how to get a verification through SMS after the jump.

Google Wave invites up for grabs!

Google Wave is a personal collaboration and communication tool announced by Google in their May 27 conference. It is designed to merge tools such as instant messaging, e-mail, wikis and social networking into one web-based service.

The name was inspired by the Firefly television series in which a Wave is an electronic communication (often consisting of a video call or video message). As this tool supports extensions, Google plans to release most of the source code as open source, allowing the public to develop its features through extensions.

As of this writing, I still have 12 available invites to share. If you want one, please let me know by leaving your Google e-mail address in the comments section below. Please note that once I send you an invite, you won't be able to receive a notification at once. It will take some time, as Google is still polishing a lot of things to improve this tool.

Dell enters the smartphone market

Yes, you've read it correctly! Dell Inc., the world's no. 3 personal computer maker, will now enter the smartphone market and is set to launch its first smartphone in China in late November, to be followed by Brazil towards the end of the 2009.

Though details for Dell's long-rumored phone aren't so much clear, Reuters reports that the smartphone is called Mini 3. It will run with Google's Android software and will be based on the OPhone platform, a lower-cost technology developed by chipmaker Marvell Technology Group Ltd.

Targeted for the consumer market instead of the enterprises, Dell's reason for launching in China and Brazil is because of their large subscriber bases and because of existing telecom partnerships in those countries like AT&T and Verizon in the United States and Vodafone in Europe.

Vote for Efren Penaflorida as CNN Hero of 2009

I have voted for Efren "Kuya Ef!" Penaflorida Jr. of the Philippines as my CNN Hero for the year 2009. Don't miss the chance to vote for him as well, as we appreciate his championing of children through his pushcart classes.

At 28, Efren offers Filipino youth an alternative to gang membership through education. Together with other teen volunteers, they have been roaming around the streets to teach basic reading and writing skills to the needy ones by using a pushcart classroom. Isn't it incredible and heart-warming that someone really cares for the needy, and have actually spent time and labor in providing knowledge to the children of our future? What are you waiting for, vote for Efren today. No limits in voting! Voting ends on November 19 (6AM ET).

Google Chrome Themes & Youtube Tip

Google aims to make its products more personalized by giving customization options to its consumers. In the previous months, Google has launched its themes for Gmail, and just recently they have enabled customization of Google Chrome's look and feel through themes as well.

With its recent Artist Themes for Google Chrome, the browser developer invited leading artists, architects, musicians, illustrators, filmmakers and fashion and interior designers from across the globe to create artwork for an unusual canvas: the modern web browser. The result, of course, is a mixture of passive and wild designs from both simple and overly creative artists. In addition, Google also has its own set of themes, but these are more on the simple side.

Haven't changed your browser's theme yet? You just need to open a new tab (Ctrl+T or click New Tab) and click on the lower right-striped design in your browser. Choose from hundreds of themes available.

How? Just simple - by coming up with a music video that speaks of the many must-see places in the Philippines through collaboration with MTV and Apl.de.ap (Allan Pineda Lindo) of the Black Eyed Peas, who is also of Filipino roots.

My Experience of Typhoon Ondoy

It was September 24 (Thursday) when we arrived at Marikina to setup for an event, which will happen on the weekend of that week. It was already drizzling and raining that night and it even got worse the next night. Saturday came and the rain was so hard already upon waking up. As the saying goes, "the show must go on" so we hurriedly ate breakfast and left for Robinsons Metroeast. Little did we know that we will be trapped in there for 24 hours.

As Typhon Ondloy hit Manila and other places, my team and I were at Robinsons Metroeast about to have an event. Due to flash floods that quickly hit the area, the event was cancelled, but we cannot leave the mall anymore. We stayed there overnight together with strangers, sleeping on floors and carpets. We only had a few food - bread, water, chips - to get us through overnight.

Your Opinion: RP Flag Gets a 9th Ray?

Philstar.com reported that the sun in RP flag may get its ninth ray. As we all know, the Philippine flag currently has eight rays that represent Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Laguna, and Batangas - these are the provinces that led the uprising against Spanish oppression during the country's past.

Last September 22, Congress has approved Senator Richard Gordon's Senate Bill (SB) 3307 in amendment to Republic Act 8491, otherwise known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines. The bill that Gordon authored sees to add a ninth ray to the sun on the Philippine flag to honor Filipino Muslims, hoping that the said measure would foster greater unity among Filipinos regardless of religion. In addition, Gordon said,
We are a country that has had a conflict with our Muslim brothers for the last so many decades. I think this is a big step towards reuniting our country, recognizing the contributions of our fellow countrymen, the Filipino Muslims.

This is a great step in recognizing the fact that we had Muslims such as Lapu-Lapu, Sultan Kudarat, Amai Pakpak, Sorongan, who kept fighting the Spaniards long before this country thought of a revolution against Spain. This would foster unity, make sure that nobody is excluded. If we are to have national unity in this country it must begin in our flag, it must be symbolized in our flag.

We take an amendment of the law here but we actually amend the mindset of our countrymen and bring the nation back to its original posture, one that will not accept tyranny, one that will oppose tyranny. And we should give credit where credit is due.

What's your take on this?

Life Lessons to Remember

“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” - Maria Robinson

Life is like a roller coaster ride and we cannot deny that. Sometimes we do things for wrong reasons, but in the end we come out victorious not for the actual thing that we did, but with the life lesson we got from it. Below are some life lessons I got from LittleMiss.

  • When someone lies to you, it teaches you that things are not always what they seem. The truth is often far beneath the surface. Look beyond the masks people wear if you want to know what is in their hearts. Remove your own masks to let people know who you really are.
  • When someone steals from you it teaches you that nothing is forever. Always appreciate what you have. You never know when you might lose it. Never take your friends or family for granted, because today and sometimes only this very moment is the only guarantee you may have.
  • When someone inflicts injury upon you, it teaches you that the human state is a very fragile one. Protect and take care of your body as best as you can, it’s the one thing that you are sure to have forever.
  • When someone mocks you, it teaches you that no two people are alike. When you encounter people who are different from you, do not judge them by how they look or act, instead base it on the contents of what is in their hearts.
  • When someone breaks your heart, it teaches you that loving someone does not always mean that the person will love you back. But don’t turn your back on love, because when you find the right person, the joy that one person brings you will make up for all of your past hurts. Times a thousand fold.

Gary V & Martin "AS 1" Concert

Their music style and perhaps their personality may be different, but it never hindered them to be good friends in and outside of showbiz. UNO's Online Presence

Don't know what UNO is? Let me quote directly from their website:
UNO is a monthly magazine for the discerning man (and woman). There are features on women we admire, occurrences worth covering, art forms we appreciate, objects that inspire acquisitiveness, and ideas that deserve attention, among other things.
You have to agree with me on this: UNO made the right choice of coming up with a brand new team that started the magazine's revamp last June 2009. Having two of my most followed personalities in terms of writing, blogging, and technology - RJ Ledesma (EIC) and Jayvee Fernandez (Tech Editor) - the magazine's online presence greatly increased. I'm not saying it's all because of the two them, of course it takes a group effort to come up with something extraordinary. Together with RJ and Jayvee are Yvette Tan, Luis Katigbak (who is my org mate's brother), Juan Caguicla, Erwin Romulo, Ramon De Veyra, and Shawn Yao.

Since the new team took their positions, they have widely promoted the magazine through various launch parties, link exchanges, video features, and social network posts. In fact, now that they have reached more than 1,000 fans, the team is cooking a surprise that's coming in October. Watch out by being fan of their Facebook page!

Michael Jackson Medley

With technology and the ingenuity of people, a lot of things can be done! This amazing medley is a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, and can be said to be really entertaining! I have watched this a couple of times now and it never fails to amaze me every time. On the vocals is Sam Tsui and helping him with the arrangement and production is Kurt Schneider.

Let's get to know the creators of the video after the jump.

Rules for Wearing Colors

Are your closets filled with plain black, white, gray, brown garments? Do you feel that your clothes look boring and old? If your answer to either of the two questions is "yes", then maybe these tips can help you put more life into dressing up, by injecting some colored pieces inside your wardrobe.

Tip #1: Accessorize with colors
Injecting colors in your wardrobe need not be restricted to the core garments. Colored accessories are a perfect way to show your playful side. Try a brightly colored belt such as bright blue, green or red. It is a fast, inexpensive and easy way to enhance all your existing outfits. Pair these with jeans and a white t-shirt or collared shirt to have a casual yet cool and light look during the day. To spice up your evening wear, you may stick with your jeans and wear on a dark blazer for a simple yet trendy gimik look.

Tip #2: Do not wear too much colors
One bold piece of color can be incredibly eye-catching, but more than one will simply leave you looking like a clown. The important thing to remember when wearing dominant pieces of color is that the rest of your outfit should be confined to neutrals and basics.

Oprah's 24th Season Kickoff Party

To celebrate Oprah's 24th Season premiere, they have taken over Michigan Avenue in Chicago to stage an awesome star-studded event. More than 21,000 people gathered to see performances by the Black Eyed Peas, magician Criss Angel, Jennifer Hudson, James Taylor and Rascal Flatts. For the love of Oprah, many attendees in fact traveled great distances to get a chance to witness a history-making episode of the The Oprah Show.

Black Eyed Peas' performance with the crowd was simply amazing! It has shown great coordination, planning and enthusiasm from the crowd as they ALL dance to the group's renowned song I Got a Feeling, but renaming it to Oprah's Feelin'. It gave Oprah so much of a surprise that she kept on saying "That was the coolest!" The video after the jump.

Post-It Stop Motion

I am so impressed by this video by a senior student named Bang-Yao Liu, who came from Savannah College of Art and Design. Imagine having multiple stop-play-stop captures with tons of post-it notes on the wall! This is incredibly amazing!

It took 3 months of planning, 4 days of shooting, and 6000+ post it notes to complete this video. View the making of the video in Youtube.

Thanks to Abe of Yugatech for this one.

Taking a Shower after Work-Out

I have been working out in the gym for quite some time now. Although I still don't have that sexy body everybody wants, that is not the main point of this blog entry.

Some say that taking shower right after workout is not a good practice, while a number of people also say it is a good habit. I am always reminded by my mom that I should not take a shower right after workout, because my pores are still open. She adds, "You may not realize the ill feeling at this point, but you will when you get older." Practically, she has a point. But I really can't imagine myself leaving the gym all sweaty and smelly, riding the car and painting those sweat in the car's seat covers.

My question is: Is it a good practice or not to take a shower right after workout? If it is, should it be cold or hot water, or just lukewarm? If it's not, how long should I wait? This is the question I had in mind for years and I want you readers to help me out. I need personal opinions from people who grew old working out and have been showering ever since. I also need answers based on medical facts, if you know of any. I have been reading various answers from all over the Internet, and I just can't decide which ones to follow. HELP!
