40 Tips for a Better Life

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 Leave a Comment

Reading tips from the Internet, I got this useful list where I personally follow some of it to help me sort of improve my day to day life. Read through it and just follow the things you want to believe. Remember, each person has his/her own needs/wants/beliefs.

  1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.
  2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.
  3. Buy a DVR and tape your late night shows and get more sleep.
  4. When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, ‘My purpose is to __________ today.’
  5. Live with the 3 E’s — Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.
  6. Play more games and read more books than you did in 2007.
  7. Make time to practice meditation, and prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives.
  8. Spend time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6.
  9. Dream more while you are awake.
  10. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
  11. Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, almonds & walnuts.
  12. Try to make at least three people smile each day.
  13. Clear clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life.
  14. Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip, OR issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
  15. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
  16. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.
  17. Smile and laugh more. It will keep the nagative blues away.
  18. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
  19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
  20. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
    Next 20 after the jump.
  21. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
  22. Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present.
  23. Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
  24. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
  25. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: ‘In five years, will this matter?’
  26. Forgive everyone for everything.
  27. What other people think of you is none of your business.
  28. Remember God heals everything.
  29. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
  30. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.
  31. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
  32. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
  33. The best is yet to come.
  34. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
  35. Do the right thing!
  36. Call your family often.
  37. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: I am thankful for _______. Today I accomplished ____.
  38. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.
  39. Enjoy the ride. Remember this is not Disney World and you certainly don’t want a fast pass. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.
  40. Laugh when you can, apologize when you should, and let go of what you can’t change.

"Agree to disagree" sounds like some of the drivel Dr Phil spouts!

You don't have to win every argument, but sometimes you do have to be mature enough to recognize you're wrong and apologize. "Agreeing to disagree" doesn't cover it most of the time. Especially if the disagreement raises emotions to the point of an argument in the first place.

"Yes, I think that dress does make you look fat."

    ...after fight...

    "Let's just agree to disagree."

  • Anonymous said:

While I do agree with the "Agree to disagree" point, I also see your point Greg, and I think it's a great addition to the list. HOWEVER, I think your example of the situation is way off base...
If I put on a dress that really did not flatter my body at all, I would really like to know. While no, my husband shouldn't say "That dress makes you look fat", he has on occasion told me that something didn't look good on me, or didn't suit me anymore.
I know I couldn't, in good faith, say I was wrong for telling someone if they didn't look good in something. If a dress makes someone look fat, then they shouldn't be wearing the dress, and they need someone who is honest, and kind to let them know.

Great tips! I really appreciated them. Sometimes I get so busy with life that I don't think about the little things I can do to make my life better. So this was a great reminder.

great list, but do you really have to add in that god heals everything?

  • Anonymous said:

I guarantee you don't spend 10 minutes a day (or even weekly) walking with a big grin on your face. How uncomfortable. And unrealistic.

  • Anonymous said:

This is a splendid list, but that 'God heals everything' bit made me facepalm.

  • Anonymous said:

I really liked this list! Very good advice for the little things that can make a big change.

And yes, you can walk around smiling. It's not stupid. "Smiling" doesn't mean you have a big, cheesy grin on your face- just a tiny uplift at the corners of your mouth makes a big difference in how you feel, and how others respond to you. It works, I promise. :)

As for "God heals everything," what is that phrase used so often on the internet? Don't like, don't read? If someone posted anti-religious sentiments and a believer (of any faith) said anything about it, there'd be a slew of "DL, DR!" and other insulting and even derogatory comments. I'm not saying that any of the other posters would behave in such a way...

But let's just agree to disagree. ;)

You know you're screwed if you have to rely on lists like this.

If only humanity would actually follow these simple things. Life itself would be much more stress and carefree. After reading the first twenty my mood had already shifted to a better one. I enjoy articles such as these so much because it almost seems like people no longer know how to be happy. Its a teacher of happiness. The earth and life is too beautiful to be anything but happy

  • Anonymous said:

I, too, appreciate this list. I believe that your life really is a reflection of your attitude about everything. I know people who are dying of horrible diseases and they are so much more functional and happier than some of the life haters I deal with on a daily basis. I've been through alot of stuff over the last ten years and yet, I really believe that a good attitude gets you through the rough spots. And thank you for adding that God heals everything. It's okay to believe in God and if you don't, then that is your business.

"Agree to disagree" is a term that should be used as a devise to end circular arguments.

  • Anonymous said:

Yes God heals everything, you should try it sometime. Not until all else have failed usually too late by then. He's in control anyway whether we like it or not. If in doubt try to stop breathing for about two minutes...that's how long most 'normal' and healthy people can go anyway...But stop and think where does the air we breathe comes from, don't say photosynthesis either..
Forgiving everyone for everything;I believe is phenomenal, if you don't forgive why should God or anyone forgive you, besides I believe the world need to spend more time researching the meaning of forgiveness....If we all forgive, the world would would be a more pleasant place to sojourn...Remember life is a journey, how pleasant or horrible experience we have depends solely on our choices. Most times we need to forgive ourselves.

I think your list is great -and I think it's weird that people leave little hate messages on a list that's so positive! Even if you don't agree, shut up about it -go make your own damn list.

  • DMP said:

I think for the sake of spreading your message further, you should eliminate the things about God and prayer. It makes the whole list seem religiously biased, especially when the other 38.5 tips are so useful and completely true.

I got one to add if I may be allowed. Help anybody and everybody that needs it in any particular day and it will come back to you in two fold!

I'm going to bookmark your site..Thanks for posting !

I think that all of these are great, except for the "God heals everything" part. All of these except for that one are about taking charge of your own life, why leave it up to a man in the sky to do something for you?

  • Anonymous said:

Really good. My favorite: "Don't take yourself so seriously.. no one else does".

I like the getting more sleep idea. I should really do that. Keep up the good work.

    -"Yes God heals everything,"
For the record you're wrong. Assuming we go by the Christian faith and assuming that it is 100% accurate, but then you may be talking about some other God that does.

-"Not until all else have failed usually too late by then."
Isn't God supposed to be all powerful? How is it ever too late to come to him seeking help? In fact, this applies to most religions not just Christianity.

-"He's in control anyway whether we like it or not."
And here I thought he gave us free will.

-"If in doubt try to stop breathing for about two minutes...that's how long most 'normal' and healthy people can go anyway..."
I'm not sure what that has to do with proving God exists or is there for you, in fact, your brain does that for you- even if you continued to hold your breath until you passed out, while unconscious your brain would take over breathing.

-"But stop and think where does the air we breathe comes from, don't say photosynthesis either.."
What's 2 + 2, don't say 4 either. If you want an answer you don't put what is an acceptable answer, as long as it is a correct answer it should be accepted. Though photosynthesis, to be fair, is not a complete answer.

-"Forgiving everyone for everything;I believe is phenomenal,"
I agree 100%. And to what someone else said, forgiving everyone of everything is not how people get stuck in abusive relationships. There is a difference between forgiving and allowing things to happen again. It's more like don't hold grudges.

-"if you don't forgive why should God or anyone forgive you,"
Isn't God supposed to forgive everyone? At least, now that Jesus sacrificed himself. Just because we mere mortals fail at perfection doesn't mean God does.

I agree with the rest of your post.

And to this blog, while I don't believe in a God or gods, I have no problem with you posting on your blog that God heals everything, it is your blog and your personal beliefs after all.

    You lost me at 'prayer.'

    "Remember God heals everything."

Yeah right. Except that little girl who had treatable diabetes and her parents prayed her to death instead of taking her to the hospital.

And how come all the wounded soldiers' limbs don't magically reappear after their arms or legs are blown up by an IED?

I'll stop there, I don't want to waste my time.

You can lead a person to knowledge, but you can't make them think!

  • Anonymous said:

Nice list but 32 and 33 are contradictory.

    32 says you have everything
33 says best is yet to come

How can you have everything when best thing is yet to come?

You might want to delete 32 as 33 is stronger.

    Thank You.

I'm troubled by all the anti-God, anti-religion bias evident in several of the posts. The arguments over "if God exists?" have been going on for centuries and will continue. A person with faith cannot be convinced God does not exist, just as a person with no faith cannot be convinced God does exist. The examples used to suggest God does not exist are specious at best. As a list, I like it-may not agree with all of the suggestions so I'll take what I can use and leave the rest for someone else to use. Works for me

Two suggestions; look at the back of your money & research the symbolism on the $1 bill--should we all start burning our money because it says "In God We Trust", not very practical. Second, research Pascal's Wager--it will give you food for thought, maybe a new perspective. Just suggestions. Have a good day wherever you are.

Read through it and just follow the things you want to believe. Remember, each person has his/her own needs/wants/beliefs.

wow. can some of you people read? if you don't believe it, here's an idea: DON'T READ IT. everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, whatever they are, and if someone wants to post this list because it is what they believe why shouldn't they be able to? That's right. They should be able to.

    Moral of story:
If you don't like it, find something better to do with your time then trample on someone elses beliefs. Thanks :)

  • Anonymous said:

I would have liked it very much, except your reference to god, since there is no such thing, and the rest of the items seem to agree with my belief...

@ sai: if you don't want to read it then don't. clearly there are many other people who are enjoying it.

I think A lot of People are becoming confused and taking the "God Heals Everything" To Literal. In my opinion I believe what the author of this blog was trying to imply is that if you have enough faith a problem can be resolved, it could be, you just need the faith (belief)that your problems will work themselves out the way they should. Also I think its a way of saying everything happens for a reason and its part of our "plan" but whatever doesn't kill you is only going to make you stronger and you will get passed it....

    IDK that's my opinion may-b I'm crazy!!

This was looking great until you mentioned God...sheesh...

There's much truth to this list which is why so many of you are trying to tear it apart because you don't want to face the facts. Each of you are entitled to your own beliefs & I personally wish I had this list 10 years ago as it would have made a big difference in my life. The world would be a better place only if we all grow some patience and tolerance & instead of judging, try to understand why. Stop analyzing & start living, you're only on this journey once. You can't appreciate the good times unless you've faced hardship & sorrow. For the ones who can't seem to see anything good maybe you should pay attention to #'s 3,10 & 37. You need it badly. I personally agree with #8 because I'm sure all you haters are in between 6 - 70 years old. Get over yourself,it's not about you. Start smiling and praying because you obviously really need it.

Yeah, the god stuff was weird, but sheesh i dont like the guy either but that dosnt mean i cant over look the prayer and god stuff and appreciate the rest of the list.
Also, i think that for the sake of people who tend to take things WAY to literally, you should add " use your common sense at all times".
Such as the person who stated the abusive relationships remark, well, we all have to use our common sense sometimes right? So TRY to forgive all, but if your CS and instincts tell you to run, then do so.

my only contention to the arguments about the "god heals everything" debate are that we're being told that if we don't like it we should just keep it to ourselves.

The issue is that using that phrase is exclusive, and it is our right to voice objection to it's use.

I personally have no issue with what someone chooses to write on their own blog, but telling the commenters that they "just shouldn't read it" or keep it to themselves is simply not fair or true. Everyone has a right to express their opinion, even and especially if it is disagreeing with the majority.

  • Kristin said:

Love the list! Very inspirational but I also object to the 'God heals everything'. After I read all of these comments I felt good knowing there are so many people who are smart enough to stray away from a belief that people have merely because they want someone or something to blame for their misfortunes and give them hope. To all of you who are saying, "if you don't like it don't read it", you know you would be going ballistic if he would have written 'God doesn't heal everything' instead. So yes, he has the right to express his beliefs and so do we. Plus, "DL,DR" makes no sense at all.
