Samsung Galaxy Tab: Another iPad Killer Steps Up

Since the release of Apple’s Ipad earlier this year, several companies have stepped up to dethrone the leader in pad/tablet sales. The most up-and-coming of these contenders is Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. While only time will tell if the Galaxy Tab will prove to be a true “Ipad killer”, Samsung’s prospects are already quite promising.

Here’s a quick comparison of the specs, as differentiated by our second guest writer Alexis Bonari:

Apple's iPad:
  • Operating System: Mac OSX
  • 3G capable
  • Wi-Fi
  • Supports Apple Iapps software
  • Lacks front-facing camera
Samsung's Galaxy Tab:
  • Operating System: Google’s Android OS
  • 3G capable
  • Wi-Fi
  • Rumored to have full access to the Google Android marketplace
  • Front facing camera for video calling

Things To Consider:

1. Apps
As a professed lover of the Android operating system, it pains me to admit that the Android Marketplace is a mess. While there is significantly less regulation, this has proven to result in more faulty apps and app redundancy. Apple’s App Store, on the other hand, is seamlessly run and boasts a huge variety of quality apps. On this point, the iPad beats the Galaxy Tab hands-down.

2. Operating System
As I already stated, I love the Android OS. Undoubtedly, Mac OSX is a wonderful operating system and has fewer viruses and security issues than its Windows counterpart, the Android system has closed most of these loopholes while allowing more freedom to the user. To a knowledgeable user, the Android system’s flexibility reigns supreme.

3. Size/Weight
Once again, the Galaxy Tab wins the day. Its measurements are much smaller than those of the Ipad and it weighs less. If you’re primarily planning on using it as an e-reader, you’ll appreciate the lighter weight and easily stored dimensions

4. Memory
Out of the box, both systems have similar memory capacities. The similarities begin and end there. iPad memory cannot be upgraded. What you purchase is what you’re stuck with, end of story. Contrast this to the Galaxy Tab’s upgradable memory (with inexpensive memory sticks, no less), and the winner of the memory wars becomes obvious.

Reports from the official unveiling of the Samsung tablet indicate that the price of the Galaxy Tab will range between $500 and $1000. This places it in direct competition with Apple for the high-end tablet market.

Of all the iPad killers in the market today, the Galaxy Tab has the best chance of unseating Apple after a spec for spec comparison.
