Tech Buys and Goodbyes

Unlike basketball games that have time-out’s, technology runs after its own life in coping up with one trend to another. Consumers need to satisfy our tech-savvy hunger, which is why we always look for organizations that drive ingenuity and innovation as fast as possible.

This is exactly why technology companies strive to be the best and the first in launching latest gadgets, so that they will be able to set the tone in the market. However, no matter how constant the research and developments may be, some companies just cannot keep up with their competitors. As a result, they buy or sell another company to leverage on strengths, maximize opportunities and lessen threats against a rival company.

What Makes Videos Click?

Studies show that visual communication creates more impact to humans as compared to written or oral communications. The phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” has been proven to be true, especially at this time of multimedia and mass communication. What more if they were not just plain pictures but videos, which have both graphic and audio composition?

Back in 2008, reports projected a 129.5 million viewership of online videos, and were expected to increase to 183.3 million by 2013. Today, people use the power of Youtube or videos to get their message across to viewers. Although quite hard to maintain, many succeed because of a limited set of producers willing to shed out effort and time.

On the other hand, most advertisers maximize the visual multimedia to draw people to purchase their products or services. Since competition is very tough, only a few commercials succeed to become viral campaigns. What makes a video viral then? Actually, it just happens.

How to Download Your Facebook Data

Did you know that Facebook already allows us to use Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTP Secure)? It's an encrypted form of information transfer on the internet, so our Facebook sessions are more secured.

In addition to that, they also allow us to download everything - as in EVERYTHING - our profile contains. I am not sure when did this feature start, but I'm glad they have this option now. It may come in handy if our data (e.g. pictures, videos) are only available in Facebook and we want to have a backup of those for whatever purpose it may serve us.

What can be downloaded?

Downloading from Facebook contains the following:
  • Our profile information (e.g. contact information, interests, groups)
  • Wall posts and content that we and our friends have posted to your profile
  • Photos and videos that we have uploaded to our account

Tweetup 101

Have you seen the word “Tweetup” and ever wondered what it really meant? Basically, a tweetup (or Twitter meet-up) is an informal gathering of Twitter users with no agenda at all, well, except to socialize. Most of the time, the people who attend tweetups have already built an online friendship with other tweeps (Twitter peeps) and have found common interest amongst themselves.

From online sharing to personal meeting, a tweetup is a great venue to talk and get to know people from different walks of life. Whether it is catching up with old friends, learning interesting things, sharing ideas or simply just having fun, a tweetup can be your best source of networking. You’ll never know who you will bump into the room – a local government official, your future employer or your favorite celebrity. The networking part is what makes a tweetup very exciting.

Share Ideas, Go Beyond the Earth Hour

IdeasProject is an online community powered by Nokia in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) where anyone can brainstorm and share their ideas centered on how mobile phones and applications can improve our ability to live in a sustainable way.

Tagged as Beyond Earth Hour Challenge, this initiative complements the Earth Hour's call to "go beyond the hour" or simply for us not to stop after the Earth Hour last March 26. Running from March 25-April 14, the challenge calls for people to think and share ideas on how we can use our mobile devices to make the world a better place to live in. Why mobile devices? Because throughout the years, these mobile devices have represented a powerful way to bring the world together, thus presenting a major impact in helping save the environment through sustainable way of living.

A Possible Solution to Music Piracy (in the Philippines)

Music piracy has been an issue for so long and has been the source of frustration for most performing artists. It’s as simple as few clicks, a few minutes of download and before you know it, you’ve got a copyrighted music file on your computer… absolutely free.

Millions of people around the globe are into piracy, and they have several reasons for doing it. For instance, why do you need to purchase an entire CD when you only want a single song out of it? Why is there a need to pay hundreds of pesos when the whole album is already available online? And why do you even have to leave the comfort of your home to purchase a collection, when you can get it with an internet connection (which you actually often use anyway)? Whether it’s downloading from whatever site or ripping it off from a friend’s purchased CD, it is still piracy.

Building Relationships through Social Media

The life of a computer enthusiast is not complete without engaging in social media. With over 20 million Filipinos going online every day, sharing and learning is never ending via Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, and more. Whatever our reasons are for signing up to these different channels, we need to remember that building relationship is the cornerstone of social media.

We’ve invested time, money, and effort going online to connect to different people and find interesting things that will enrich our knowledge. But how do we exactly distinguish ourselves from the vast majority of online users who think that social networking is “just for fun” (though of course it’s fun too)? Allow me to list down some of my learning throughout the years.
